farm manager’s house

GANSVLEI, KNYSNA

Setting & Position
Set along the crest of a hill in Gansvlei, Knysna, this 230m² farmhouse looks out across vineyards toward the Goukamma River as it meets the sea, with the Outeniqua Mountains forming a distant backdrop. Modest in size but confident in presence, the two-bedroom house carries a quiet sense of monumentality. It sits carefully on the ridge, holding its position while opening wide to the landscape on all sides.

Planning & Climate Response
The plan is shaped by climate as much as by view. Two verandas anchor the house—one facing north, sheltered from the prevailing south-easter, and the other facing south toward the sea, protected from stronger western winds. Together, they create usable outdoor spaces throughout the year. The main bedroom shares this southern outlook, aligning directly with the river mouth. Clerestory windows bring in soft northern light, keeping the interior bright without harsh exposure.

Form & Interior Character
The proportions draw quietly from Italian farmhouses—simple, balanced, and without unnecessary detail—an understated nod to the Italian client. At the centre, a double-volume living space reinterprets the feeling of a barn: open, calm, and grounded. Windows are placed to emphasise both height and view, while a central dividing fireplace anchors the space, warming the dining and living areas on either side and giving the room a clear sense of focus.
